
In partnership with ACCESS Services in Los Angeles, MMP teaches Access Customers how to use public transportation safely and independently throughout Los Angeles County. MMP utilizes an individualized “person-centered” approach to design customized trainings to fit the individual needs of each participant, resulting in consistently high levels of success in achieving their transit goals.
What Travel Training Services are available in Los Angeles County?
Please note that all Travel Training Services listed below are offered in English and Spanish!
Individual Travel Training
Personalized, in-depth, one-on-one instructional training for ACCESS customers to learn the skills needed to use public transit safely and independently. This includes:
- Preparing for travel on transit
- How to plan trips on transit
- Boarding and Exiting transit
- Accessibility features on transit
- ADA Rights and Responsibilities when using transit
- Safety and Emergency preparedness
Small Group Training
Travel Training is conducted in small groups of 3-6 individuals who are trained to a pre-determined destination. Skills taught are the same that are taught in individual travel trainings.
O&M Travel Training
Individual travel training for ACCESS customers who have visual impairments. Participants are required to have previously completed O&M training within the last 3 years.
Group Travel Training Workshops
A 1-hour classroom session hosted at locations throughout Los Angeles County, available for anyone who is interested in learning how to ride public transit. ACCESS eligibility is NOT required to participate in workshops.
Outreach Presentations and Events
Travel Training Staff are available to attend a variety of fairs, presentations, and resource tables to promote the ACCESS/MMP Travel Training Program.
What are the requirements for participating in Travel Training in Los Angeles?
Individual and Small Group Training
- Participants must be eligible for ACCESS Paratransit services with ADA eligibility of “Unconditional” or “Conditional” in order to participate.
- Participants must be able to demonstrate the following skills:
- Understand and respond to questions asked of them.
- Provide ID information in case of emergency.
- Communicate needs to others (verbal or nonverbal format)
- Follow directions.
- Demonstrate the strength and endurance to walk/propel to the bus stop safely.
O&M Travel Training
In addition to the skills listed for Individual/Small Group Training, O & M participants are required to have completed formal O&M training within the last 3 years.
How do I apply for Travel Training Services?
For Individual or Small Group Travel Training
An application must be completed by you or by someone completing the application with your consent. Once the application is submitted, MMP will review your application and will contact you to schedule an in-person Transit Needs Evaluation (TNE).

To host an in-person Workshop, Facility Requirements are:
- A room large enough to hold 10 to 20 attendees plus an instructor
- Room needs to have the ability to show PPT presentations (MMP brings their own computer equipment)
- Facility has the option to oversee the RSVPs- needs to perform confirmation calls the day before in order to ensure minimum attendance.
To host Virtual Workshops, Facility Requirements are:
- Facility has to ensure that participants have equipment and area able to access the internet and know how to access Zoom.
- Facility oversees the RSVPs- needs to perform confirmation calls the day before in order to ensure minimum attendance.
